Bike Month- The Joondalup community has been active this Bike Month.
- October marks WA Bike Month - a State Government initiative
Throughout the month of October, Bike month, 41 events have run across WA to encourage people to get outside and take up cycling. Some of the events included a sunset river ride, a mountain bike day and even Bike Month breakfasts.
Infrastructure to facilitate participation in cycling is important, which is why the McGowan government is continuing to invest in cycling infrastructure throughout the state.
The McGowan Government is delivering $347 million in cycling and walking infrastructure across WA over the next four years. These projects include:
- $47 million for local bicycle infrastructure through the Western Australian Bicycle Network Grants Program
- $62 million to expand the Principal Shared Path network
- $46 million to for riding and walking facilities as part of major infrastructure projects including the Swan River Crossing project, Mitchell Freeway projects and Tonkin Highway Extension
The WA Bicycle Network Plan (WABN) is a State Government initiative that seeks to build or upgrade paths to be safe, connected, convenient and widely accepted as a form of transport. The Principal Shared Path Expansion Program is a key action of the WABN.
For the wider Perth area, the focus is on connecting gaps and expanding paths in the current network from the CBD to areas along railway lines and arterial roads. This will link our communities with accessible services and jobs in our Joondalup CBD and beyond. Our government’s investment in cycling infrastructure will make it easier for people to access the Joondalup city centre.
The State Government is delivering record levels of cycling infrastructure, with more than 150 kilometres of high-quality cycling and walking paths created since 2017.
Keeping kids active and engaged in their local community is important for their health, development, and wellbeing. That’s why, locally in Joondalup, Ms Hamilton regularly donates $300 bicycle vouchers to local schools across the community. These vouchers also support small businesses including our local bike stores.
Comments attributed to Joondalup MLA Emily Hamilton:
"I am so pleased to regularly support our local primary schools with a bike voucher, giving more local students the opportunity to get outdoors and active in our community.
Biking is great for our health and wellbeing; it is also an exceptional way to explore Joondalup and Western Australia.”
