Consultation on Stage 2 Plan for Plastics

  • Public comments invited on Stage 2 of single-use plastic bans
  • New items phased out from next year, including coffee cups
  • Online survey and community consultation open until 18 November 2022

Emily Hamilton MLA, Member for Joondalup, encourages the Joondalup community to get involved in community consultation on Stage 2 of the Plan for Plastics.

The McGowan Labor Government is serious about reducing the impact of plastics on our planet – that’s why we announced a fast-tracked Plan for Plastics last year.

The first stage of WA's Plan for Plastics, enforced since July, saw a ban on plastic plates, bowls, cups, cutlery, stirrers, straws, thick plastic bags, polystyrene food containers, and helium balloon releases.

The Joondalup community has wholeheartedly embraced Stage 1 of the Plan for Plastics, and now the McGowan Government is seeking feedback on Stage 2 of our Plan for Plastics, which is to be introduced from February 2023.

Eight community consultation sessions are being held online from late September to 18 November 2022. A survey will also gather community and industry feedback.

Targeted items in Stage 2 of the Plan for Plastics include:

  • Expanded polystyrene packaging
  • Produce bags
  • Polystyrene cups
  • Takeaway containers
  • Cotton buds with plastic shafts
  • Microbeads
  • Non-compostable and plastic-lined coffee cups and lids

Transition periods could range from six to eighteen months to allow businesses to use up supplies and adapt to the changes before the rules are enforced.

Through the WA Plastic Free Places program, we are helping retailers, community groups and suppliers to phase out these plastic products in favour of sustainable alternatives.

To read the discussion paper, register for a consultation session or to complete the survey, visit www.wa.gov.au/planforplastics by 18 November.

Comments attributed to Emily Hamilton:

“Our plan has received overwhelming support across the state, and we’re proud to be delivering a world-class strategy to combat plastic waste and protect our local environment.

“To ensure that we continue to deliver on our commitment to West Australians, phase 2 of the plan will also include a rigorous consultation period with the community. Be sure to provide any input you may have on this new phase of the plan as we effectively deliver our commitment of a more sustainable WA to our community.”
