Joondalup Seniors Cyber-Security Forum
- Joondalup MLA Emily Hamilton hosted a cyber-security forum to inform Seniors about how to keep safe online
- Nearly 200 people attended the event held on Monday 22 August
It was a full house at the Joondalup Sports Association last week, with nearly 200 seniors attending a cyber security forum hosted by Emily Hamilton, Member for Joondalup.
Edith Cowan University (ECU) cyber-security expert, Dr David Cook, shared humorous real-life scenarios for attendees to learn from.
Dr Cook provided tips on how to avoid becoming the target of cybercrime, including keeping passwords secure, advising not to carry out banking online over public networks and the latest information on mobile phone scams.
Dr Cook is a Lecturer within the School of Science at ECU, a member of the ECU Security Research Institute, a member of the Australian Centre for Cyber Security Excellence (ACCSE), and a Fellow of the Australian Computer Society.
Attendees took notes and asked questions throughout the presentation and feedback was that the information shared was extremely useful.
The event finished off with a morning tea where Dr Cook was available to answer questions and speak with attendees directly about their experiences.
Comments attributed to Emily Hamilton:
“This is the second cyber-security forum that I have held, and I am so pleased that seniors have provided feedback that they are very valuable and informative given that they are unfortunately particularly vulnerable to being deceived or scammed online.
“I thank Dr Cook and Marlene Robins for giving their time to support our Joondalup community.”
