22 June 2020
• Building works completed with project to be finished by the end of July
• $5 million performing arts centre at Ocean Reef Senior High School expected to be in use in Term 3
There was great excitement among a small group of Ocean Reef Senior High School students and staff today, as they stepped into the school’s almost completed performing arts centre for the first time.
Member for Joondalup Emily Hamilton joined staff and school captains to see some of the high-tech features of the $5 million project being delivered to one of our local high schools.
Once finished, the facility will provide students with the opportunity to learn in a professional and high-quality space for teaching, rehearsal and performance.
Complementing the school’s existing performing arts centre, the new building will have a larger 100 square metre stage and audience space with retractable seating and teaching spaces.
The modern facility will also include a rehearsal space, green rooms, music practice rooms, toilets and storeroom.
When construction of the new arts centre is completed next month, the existing theatres will be refurbished into a dance studio and music practice room.
Comments attributed to Joondalup MLA Emily Hamilton:
“The performing arts centre is an important election commitment that the McGowan Government and I have delivered that will provide a first-class facility for students to learn and perform.
“This will be a big asset for the northern suburbs community, as the school has plans for it to be available for the wider community to utilise too.
“This $5 million project is another example of the McGowan Government’s massive investment in Perth’s growing northern suburbs.”
Comments attributed to Principal of Ocean Reef Senior High School, Karon Brookes:
“Students and teachers are incredibly excited about having their first live music performance in front of a packed audience in our new Performing Arts Centre, which is set to open late July.
“The theatre, lightning, acoustics and sound systems will showcase our talented students and provide a venue to deliver first class industry qualifications and stage future school productions.
“From its inception this project has been driven by strong community and parent support, with a view to ensuring our performing arts students are on a pathway to success in their chosen careers.”
