The Cook Government's expansion of Joondalup Health Campus has reached another significant milestone with construction underway on a new 112-bed public ward block, designed to meet the needs of the community well into the future.

The building will accommodate a 30-bed medical and surgical inpatient ward as well as a 16-bed Cardiac Care Unit and will be linked to the existing main hospital to allow for the seamless transfer of patients.

It will also link to the recently completed 102-bed Mental Health Unit, which was opened in August.

Artist's impressions of the new five-storey facility were unveiled today, revealing a contemporary build to suit current and future needs of patients.

The majority of the patient rooms are spacious single rooms with large picture windows that will be decorated with a calming neutral and blue scheme.

The new beds will support the expansion of surgical services underway at the hospital, including:

  • a new operating theatre (taking the total to 13 operating theatres);
  • a new Interventional Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory (taking the total to two);
  • a new, larger anaesthetic room (taking the total to five);
  • four new Post Anaesthesia Care Unit bed bays (taking the total to 30);
  • five additional pre-surgery holding bays (taking the total to 15); and
  • increased clinical support areas.

The addition of a new theatre and new catheterisation lab on site will enable the hospital to expand its current range of clinical services and cater for more patients to support emergency and elective care.

Services include orthopaedic and general surgery, ear, nose and throat, urology and vascular surgery, and cancer surgery, with the hospital also the State referral service for bariatric and peritonectomy.

The 112-bed ward block will include the construction of 66 beds to be set aside to meet future demand.

The new facility is part of the $269.4 million expansion of Joondalup Health Campus co-funded by the State and Commonwealth Governments and supports the Cook Government's commitment to modernising public health facilities.

The project was a 2017 WA Labor election commitment, which has seen the 102-bed Mental Health Unit, expansion of the Emergency Department (ED) and staff car park already completed and opened.
